36 Bottles Pinot Noir 2010                                        Central Otago                        18.5-/20 points       5 Stars

Equal proportions of clone 5 and 6 Pinot Noir from a single site in Bendigo, the fruit source for the previous vintages, 10% whole bunch, given a cold soak and fermentation initiated by indigenous yeast and fermented to 14.0% alc. The wine was matured in 40% new French oak for 11 months.
Very dark, deep, near impenetrable heart of purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a full, deep bouquet of very ripe dark berry and plum aromas with notes of oak spices and dark herbs, all harmoniously interwoven. Full-bodied, this is densely concentrated and packed with rich and juicy flavours of spicy black plum fruits supported by significant tannin extraction. Good acidity is present providing tension, cut and balance, and leads to a lingering, racy finish. This is a rich, ripe and hearty, well-structured Pinot Noir that will match game meat over the next 6-8+ years.
This is the most serious 36 Bottles Pinot Noir to date and no doubt reflects the vintage and efforts of proprietors Douglas Brett and Jane Young. 18.5-8/20 Jan 2012 RRP $32.00

36 Bottles Pinot Noir 2009                                        Central Otago                        90 points       4.5 Stars

This is very Central Otago (Bendigo), showing opulence and silky smooth texture.  The bouquet is ripe and lifted showing dark cherry, game and cedary oak characters.

It is succulent and beautifully fruited on the palate with a rounded mouthfeel and well pitched fine tannins. The wine is most pleasing and long on the finish. 

At its best: now to 2014.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Gris 2009

This is the second Pinot gris from Douglas Brett and Jane young, the 'winesmiths' who are negotiants, purchasing quality fruit and employing the expertise of Dan and Sarah-Kate Dineen in making the wines.  Made from Cromwell Basin fruit, fermented to 14.2% alc and 7.5 g/l residual sugar, this strikes an excellent balance of freshness and accessibility.  Lovely stonefruit and pear aromas and flavours, with a lush but refeshing palate, this invites you to aperitif sipping and drinking with mildly spiced Asian cuisine in particular.  A most attractive wine that will keep well over the next 3 - 4 years.

Central Otago is well known for outstanding Pinot Noirs, but their Pinot Gris are also making serious impressions, helped by a lovely wine like this one.  Made by the accomplished winemaking couple, Dan and Sarah-Kate Dineen, the bouquet displays peach, floral and juicy pear characters. 

It's succulent and smooth on the palate with excellent mid palate weight and subtle sweetness (7.5 g/l).  The perfectly pitched acidity provides lovely freshness and a lengthy finish.  A gorgeous wine.

At its best: now to 2013.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008

36 bottles.  That was Douglas Brett and Jane Young’s total production of their first vintage in 1999 of Hawke’s Bay wine in their garage.  Douglas has always been a lover of wine, well-respected for his palate being a wine options champion as well as very regular attendee at all the best wine tastings in Wellington (at Regional Wines, of course) for two decades.  Combined with Jane originally coming from Central Otago , the ‘36 Bottles’ label has become a commercial reality with the release of this 2008 Central Otago Pinot Noir. Douglas and Jane call themselves ‘Winesmiths’, and are in effect negotiants, sourcing fine parcels of fruit, in this case from the Bendigo sub-region, and contracting the talented Sarah-Kate and Dan Dineen of Maude Wines in Wanaka to vinify the wine.  Pinot Noir clones 5 and 6, of which 15% of the latter was whole bunch were fermented to 14.0% alc and the wine aged for 9 months in 40% new French barriques.  The 2008 vintage was a good one with healthy crops and the 36 Bottles Pinot Noir reflects this with its elegant, bright black cherry and plum flavours and subtle savoury and floral notes.  The tannins are supple and the structural proportion will allow attractive drinking over the next 3-5 years.  Being wine ‘consumers’, Douglas and Jane have priced their wine realistically and in fact to over-deliver.  Bravo, we are very pleased to stock and sell your wine!

36 Bottles Pinot Noir 2008                                       Central Otago                        92 points        4.5 Stars

Grapes were destemmed and fermented in open-top fermenters with regular hand plunging. The finished wine was then matured in new and older French oak barriques for 9 months. Ripe and opulent, this immediately appealing Pinot displays dark cherry, savoury mushroom and subtle spice characters on the nose. The palate is juicy upfront with satin smooth texture, nicely pitched acidity and fine-grained tannins. The wine is rich and sumptuous yet remains elegant and beautifully poised.

36 Bottles Pinot Gris 2008                                        Central Otago                        91 points       4.5 Stars

This is a very exciting new label by Douglas Brett and an enthusiastic team. The name comes from the very first 36 bottles they produced back in 1999. Now they have released their first commercial release with Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

A portion of the grapes were whole bunch pressed and the other crushed and left on skin for 24 hours prior to fermentation. The nose beautifully elegant and gently perfumed showing peach, pear and floral characters. It's nicely weighted on the palate with silky texture and just the right amount of acid to balance the subtle sweetness. A serious Pinot Gris showing excellent varietal expression and the wine is superbly drinkable.

At its best: now to 2011.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Gris 2008
Straw yellow. The nose is subtle and at first seems neutral but apple, flowers and hints of musk are coaxed from the glass however the taste is immediately so much brighter. It's quite zingy with flavours of creamy soda, apple, lime and earthy nuances reminiscent of cultivated white mushrooms with underlying honey adding to the light viscosity of the texture. There's a richness to the wine and warmth from the alcohol and for Pinot Gris, it has good acid spine. Gosh, even Kingsley liked it.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008
Bright, crimson-tinged, translucent red. Smoky, aromatic, herbal aromas lead into a full-flavoured palate. Initially quite meaty, savoury and toasty with a juicy deliciousness, it has cherry fruit with an appealing sweetness and a hint of violet adds to its allure. It's spicy, smoky and silky textured with a hint of mocha and a zesty infusion to the long lasting finish.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008
Young, crimson and very agreeable; a wine with a lovely depth to the fruit, which is satisfying immediately with the subtle tones and savoury characters to emerge for those who wish to wait.  A very classy wine showing lots of finesse.  Several very good years of drinking ahead.  RRP $35.

36 Bottles Central Otago Pinot Gris 2008
Almost dry.  Nice wine, sound and supple with true to variety fruit and showing some class.  Made with the flair of Dan & Sarah-Kate Dineen at Maude Winery, there’s plenty of drinkability here, as is their style.  No hurry into 2010 at least. RRP $25.
